Edward Gorey at Mohonk

Edward Gorey was a celebrated artist and author whose unmistakable pen-and-ink drawings, theatrical sensibility, and dry wit have left an enduring mark on literature and popular culture. Best known for his intricately cross-hatched figures Victorian-inflected settings, and narratives that balance elegance with the absurd, Gorey created a body of work that continues to intrigue audiences of all ages.

Edward Gorey had a longstanding relationship with Mohonk and our Mystery Weekend program, which was the first of its kind. Mystery Weekend was hugely popular and drew sellout audiences. Gorey was the original illustrator for the Murder Mystery programs dating back to the 1970s, bringing his visual storytelling top life through imagery that perfectly matched the suspense, humor, and atmosphere of the experience. His illustrations helped define the program's tone and transformed it into a fully imagined world.

For Mohonk's 50th Anniversary of Mystery Weekend, we've worked with The Edward Gorey Charitable Trust to develop a collection of gifts that pay tribute to Gorey and his relationship with Mohonk.
