The Mohonk Archive houses a vast collection of historic images, including 2,000 glass lantern slides, most of which feature Mohonk subjects and scenery, circa 1900. At that time, slide presentations were displayed on a large screen through a lantern slide projector in the Mohonk Parlor.
The images of flowers in this card collection are large reproductions of the hand-tinted slides in Mohonk’s collection. The process for producing a color slide from an original black-and-white photographic image involved several steps:
The negatives from the camera were exposed directly onto three-by-four-inch, light-sensitive glass plates, and developed in chemical baths, in a similar way to regular photographs.
A colorist then applied paint directly onto the glass, achieving amazing nuance
and detail of color hues, given the very small dimensions of the working surface. He also painted in a black, opaque background in order to present a more intense aesthetic.
We've chosen 6 of our most popular flowers:
Water Lily, Columbine, Hibiscus, Bearded Iris, Passion Flower, and Marsh Marigold
